Veterans face many of the issues that I am focusing on such as Unemployment, Small business/ Entrepreneurial Support, Lack of Education, Homelessness and Healthcare issues. “Veteran business owners submit more loan applications and reach out to a wider variety of lenders, but they usually obtain less financing and get lower approval rates. We need more lender confidence in both male and female veteran entrepreneurs”(Fox). Veteran Affairs will provide timely access to our heroes all in one place. Our veterans face enough challenges as they return to and should be given a priority as we thank them for their service.
Veterans that suffer combat-related injuries, including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and traumatic brain injury should have easy access to quality healthcare. The high suicide rate for veterans is unacceptable. “Two new reports released last week from the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs show that the number of active-duty personnel and veterans who die by suicide is still increasing”(Purdue). We need to invest in high-quality care to identify at-risk individuals and increase access to private medical practices.
The size of the U.S. veteran population and service-related health problems has increased. The VA health care system is a great organization but it can not meet the needs of all our veterans in a timely fashion. Many U.S. veterans live very far from their closest VA medical center. We need to make it easier for them to access private medical care if that is what they choose. A veteran should have freedom of choice. They can go to the VA or their private doctor, or both depending on their situation. But it will take significant efforts to better prepare civilian doctors to deliver high-quality care to veterans.
A high proportion of service people experience issues that can leave them unemployed. Reintegration into the business world is the least we can do. Many large companies have made a commitment to employ service members but we need to improve the program. A service member should be able to contact the VA and be working quickly if that is what they want to do.
There should also be SBA representatives working through the VA; so that veterans can have access to all of the resources they need in one location. Veterans possess so many skills from critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership, teamwork to endurance and resiliency. Imagine a startup incubator with these people being together; supported by the VA and SBA all in one location.
